Introduction

The municipality of Ribas de Campos (175 inhabitants in 2009; 1,549 ha) is located 20 km from Palencia.

Ribas de Campos was mentioned for the first time in 922, when Count of Castile Fernán Ansúrez (916-929) founded there the monastery of Santa Cruz de la Zarza, subsequently transferred to the Order of Santiago and to the Premonstratensiens. Very wealthy in the 17th-18th centuries, the monastery was abandoned in the 19th century following the "desamortización" (nationalisation) and saved from complete ruination in June 1931, when officially registered as an Historical and Artistical Monument.

Ribas de Campos was granted in 1366 by King Peter I to Peter Manrique, sixth lord of Amusco; in the 18th century, the village belonged to the Duke of Arces.

Description

The flag and arms of Ribas de Campos are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 29 March 2004 by the Municipal Council, signed by the Mayor on 2 June 2005 and published on 7 July 2005 in the official gazette of Castile and Leon, No. 131, p. 12,243. The symbols are described as follows:

Municipal flag: Squared flag with proportion 1:1, with horizontal stripes red and green and in the middle the municipal coat of arms in full colors.

Coat of arms: Shield of Spanish shape. Gules a tower or masoned sable port and windows azure terraced vert over waves argent and azure a border argent charged with four cauldrons sable with four snakes, two entering and two leaving. [Crown not mentioned]
