Introduction

The municipality of Soto de Cerrato (191 inhabitants in 2009; 1,294 ha) is located 10 km from Palencia.

Soto de Cerrato probably emerged as a hut village built near river Pisuerga in a "soto," that is "a place planted with trees and shrubs"; the place was probably used as a quite place of retirement by the bishops of Palencia. A settlement named Soto de Luso appeared in the 11th century. Later incorporated into the royal domain, the village lived from agriculture, and, mostly, from wine-growing.

Description

The flag and arms of Soto de Cerrato are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 23 February 2005 by the Municipal Council, signed by the Mayor on 28 February 2005 and published on 10 March 2005 in the official gazette of Castile and Leon, No. 48, p. 4,403. The symbols are described as follows:

Municipal flag: Flag with proportions 2:3. On the fly panel yellow or or, the municipal coat of arms in its full colors, tierced at hoist, red or gules with the Royal crown open yellow or or, surrounded with two Maltese Crosses white or argent.

Coat of arms: Spanish-shaped shield. Vert (green) a Royal crown open or. Mantled or two oaks proper dexter and sinister a bordure gules (red) charged with eight Maltese Crosses with broken arms and eight points of the Order of St. John or of Malta. The shield surmounted with the Royal Spanish crown.
