The rainbow flag is sometimes referred to as the pride flag, LGBT pride flag and gay pride flag. The gay pride flag is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and the LGBT social movement. The flag has been in use since the 1970s. The six colors of the rainbow flag each have distinct meanings:
- red: life
- orange: healing
- yellow: sunlight
- green: nature
- blue: serenity/harmony
- violet: spirit
The colors are intended to reflect the diversity of the LGBT community. The flag originated in California but is now flown worldwide during LGBT rights marches and demonstrations. The original flag was designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. Since its inception, the design has undergone several revisions. Today, the flag consists of six stripes, with the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is usually displayed horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it would be in a natural rainbow.
